Digambar Kamat-leader of the masses 9822129339 is one of the most familiar mobile number to Goans. This cell phone is never out of reach. Never is any call to this number unanswered. Never is the call attended by anybody else other than the owner of the phone, the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat. The single greatest desirable quality of the Chief Minister is the easy accessibility. Mr Kamat is completing 55 years of an illustrious life today. Born on March 8, 1954 in a middle-class business family, Mr Kamat’s rise to the highest political office of the state of Goa exemplifies the dedication and hard work of a committed social worker. Social commitment has been second nature to Mr Kamat. Mr Kamat has many qualities as a leader. His humble nature, his true concern for the downtrodden, his commitment to Goa have earned him respect and kudos from the people. Apart from this, what places Mr Kamat in a different bracket of leadership is his ability of consensus building. People who have seen him tackle contentious issues have noticed that Mr Kamat does not arrive at decisions in a fast track mode. Nor are any of his decisions haphazard in nature. Mr Kamat has exhibited excellent administrative quality during his tenure as the Minister for Power, Art and Culture and other portfolios. Today, being at the helm of affairs, Goa is witnessing a Chief Minister, who has established a fresh concept in the administration - that of consensus building. The rigours of the call of duty at his present stint as the Chief Minister of Goa have honed his leadership abilities. Be it the participative process of preparation of the Regional Plan 2021, or the scrapping of the SEZs, Mr Digambar has stood firmly by his conviction, without yielding to any of the pressures and has boldly arrived at decisions, which are in the interest of Goa. He is particularly sympathetic to the cause of the underprivileged. There are many instances, wherein he has gone out of his way in helping the deserving people like the dependents of an accident- struck linemen in the Electricity Department, the special children, the physically handicapped persons, thesenior citizens etc. A very effective speaker and a man of conscientious details, Mr Digambar Kamat is active in public life for more than three decades. These many years in public life has only heightened the degree of his social commitment and vigour to serve the people of Goa. Integrity and clean politics can be termed as the hallmark of Mr Digambar Kamat’s political life. In spite of being in a field, sadly wherein clean image is a rarity, Mr Digambar Kamat has carved out a niche of his own. Precisely for this reason, not only in Goa but also in the rest of the country, our Chief Minister is seen as a man of virtue and class. By setting high standards of probity in his life, Mr Digambar Kamat shines as an icon figure in the political arena. Mr Digambar Kamat, as we all know, is happily married to Ms Asha. Her unstinting support and participation in his social commitment is also one of the main motivations behind his success. The couple is blessed with daughter Deepali and son Yogiraj.
